The University of Maiduguri was established in 1975 by the Federal Government of Nigeria along with six others situated in Kano, Ilorin, Sokoto, Jos, Port Harcourt and Calabar. The College of Medical Sciences was created three years after the establishment of the University (1978). The primary objective of the college was to train Medical Doctors through the MBBS programme, later BDS programme was introduce in 2002. The University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital served as the Teaching Hospital for training medical students since 1983 and dental students since 2002. The hospital has 500 bed capacity have grown over the years to 5000 bed capacity. The physical structure has been maintained and improved upon over these years including befitting accommodation for House Officers and Resident Doctors, trauma centre, oncology centre, child institute, kidney centre and stroke just to mention a few and the hospital is expanding all most always. The Department had been functioning and providing services, teaching and data for research since the inception. It started with only one pathologist and continued like that for more than 20 years of its existence. In 1988, the University embarked on academic manpower development and recruited doctors for supernumerary training in various accredited hospitals all over the country and currently the Department have 4 histopathologists and 2 senior registrar. The department have supporting staff ranging from medical laboratory scientists, technicians and administrators and we are endowed with numerous modern equipment.With this in mind, the Faculty of Engineering in the University of Maiduguri was established on 1st October 1983 with three Departments, namely Civil and Water Resources Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. However, the enrollment of students into the new Faculty commenced a year later, that is, in 1984/85 session.
